The Gielf Kebir Expedition
Twelve Days / Eleven Nights

There are other visits to the desert, to its surprising green oases, its dramatic landscapes of ocher and brown, and villages where traditional ways hold sway.

But there’s only one Gielf Kebir Expedition. Over twelve days, you’ll live the desert way of life of the desert, explore the wondrous formations of rock and sand, discover secret temples, and fall asleep under a clear night sky of a million stars, listening for the telltale murmurs of secretive animals in the distance. Discover the Western Desert as few outsiders are privileged to do.

Day 1 – Cairo, Wadi Rayan, El Fayoum (LD)
We’ll set out from Cairo after breakfast in an air-conditioned four-by-four Toyota Land Cruiser, the perfect vehicle, combining ruggedness and comfort for our desert excursion. In short order, the throbbing capital gives way to a landscape of sand and rock. We’ll twist and turn up and over escarpments, then proceed over razor-straight asphalt laid through sand dunes. Our route takes us alongside the waters of El Fayoum oasis, and on to the protected area of Wadi El Rayan, a complex of two lakes joined by a waterfall. Reptiles and foxes find shelter among the plants along the shores, and migrating birds stop to feed and rest. We’ll stay the night at the Oberg Hotel.

Day 2 – El Baharya (BLD)
After breakfast, we’ll start our drive to the oasis of Baharya, stopping along the way for a picnic, and a chance to appreciate the surprising array of wildlife that survives in the parched region. Our destination for the day is the Hotel El Bechmou at Baharya, where we’ll bathe in hot sulphureous waters under a nightly performance of shooting stars.

Day 3 – Black Desert, White Desert, Farafra (BLD)
We’ll board our vehicle to ascend through the Black Desert to view an extraordinary vista of subtle landscapes, and cross to Crystal Mountain, named for minerals reflecting in the sun, an unforgettable view, and a challenge to capture by camera. Our motor safari continues across the White Desert, bedecked with limestone columns in the shapes of giant mushrooms and imaginary beasts. By nightfall, we’ll reach the Farafra oasis, where we’ll take dinner and spend the night at the El Badaweya Hotel.

Day 4 - Farafra, Dakla, El Kasr (BLD)
We leave Farafra in the morning and head down into the great depression where lies the Dakhla oasis, once a great lake linked by water with Cairo. We’ll visit the ancient Roman burial ground at El Mozawaka and the desert fortress village of El Kasr, built of mud bricks. We’ll spend the night in the Hotel El Negoum.

Day 5 – Abu Balas, Dakla, El Gilf (BLD)
We drive today to Abu Balas, and onward to the El Gilf Plateau. In the evening, we’ll make camp and cook our meal over coals under the stars.

Day 6 – El Gilf, Aquabbat (BLD)
We continue our explorations of the plateau of El Gilf, and ascend through the Aqqabat pass, then descend and set up our overnight camp.

Day 7 – Wadi Sura (BLD)
Our desert explorations include discoveries of rock art and an airstrip abandoned since World War II. We camp for the night at Wadi Sura.

Day 8 – El Gilf El Kebir Plateau, Kamal El Din (BLD)
Continuing our explorations, we camp for the night at Kamal El Din.

Day 9 – Karkur Talh (BLD)
We make our way toward landmark Jebel Qwenat (Qwenat Mountain) and the valley of Karkur Talh replete with rock paintings and engravings, where we make camp.

Day 10 – Bir Sahara (BLD)
We continue to Bir Sahara, an ancient lake where early pottery has been excavated, and camp for the night at Jebel Kamil.

Day 11 – Sand Planet (BLD)
Our explorations continue, with an overnight encampment at Sand Planet (also known as the Sea of Sand), where cones of rock pop up like tropical islets in the sea.

Day 12 – Bir Tarafawy (BLD)
We camp for the night.

Day 13 - Baris Oasis, El Kharga Oasis (BLD)
As we approach the Nile Valley, signs of ancient civilization appear. We reach Baris Oasis, and visit the Temple of Hibis and El Bagawat. Our last night in the open is spent at El Kharga Oasis.

Day 14 – Luxor, Aswan (B)
After breakfast, we’ll reach the Nile Valley at Luxor, then follow the great river southward to conclude our journey at Aswan.

CRUISE THE NILE IN LUXURY...

Mark Twain did it. Rockefeller did it. More recently, First Ladies Barbara Bush and Laura Bush, and pop music legend Lionel Richie did it:

cruise Egypt's timeless Nile in luxury.
Only a few Nile cruisers qualify as the most luxurious vessels on the Nile. In order to meet the requirements of Nubian Nile Cruises, they must be the newest and best, with up-to-the-minute facilities and all possible luxury services such as deluxe staterooms with private bath
(shower and/or bathtub), 20-inch satellite TV,  large picture window, mini bar, individual climate control, electronic entry system and security deposit boxes, hair dryer and direct-dial telephone.
The service onboard, under the watchful control of companies renowned worldwide for excellence, must be flawless and exceed guests’ expectations, and also reflect the warm traditional hospitality of the Egyptian people.

Few vessels qualify. Here they are:

Radamis I
The four-deck, 72-meter (236-foot)-long Radamis I operated by the Swiss Mövenpick hospitality experts has 71 deluxe staterooms, four deluxe suites, a gourmet restaurant, swimming pool, bar and boutique.

Radamis II
The four-deck, 72.3-meter (237-foot)-long Radamis II operated by the Swiss Mövenpick hospitality experts has 80 luxurious staterooms (including six suites), swimming pool, gourmet restaurant, three bars, nightly music and dancing in the lounge/discotheque, onboard boutique,
hari dresser

Amarco
The brand-new, ultra-luxurious Amarco, launched in late 2003, has 51 staterooms, all with large picture windows and Internet access. Four junior suites (well equipped for handicapped passengers), two Presidential suites and two Royal suites accommodate special guests.
The Amarco is the only vessel on the Nile with a true mini-gym (not just an exercise room), and a mini-spa with two saunas, two massage rooms and steam rooms. Two elevators take guests (especially those who find stairs difficult) between decks.
Clients of Travel In Style.com receive special consideration on these luxury cruises. If you reserve your Presidential or Royal Suite through Travel In Style.com , we will provide you with a private valet to take care of your personal and touring needs, and a private guide and Egyptologist to answer any questions you may have about the wonders around you. Two
guests in each suite will be entitled to a 30-minute massage. Just for fun, we'll even engage a local fortune-teller, knowledgeable in the mystic secrets of ancient Egypt, to read the future in your palm or your coffee grounds! These special services are not available to other
passengers, even those who reserve Presidential Suites by other means.
You must reserve through Travel In Style.com to enjoy them.

Though the Nile is timeless, life is short. You may only cruise the Nile once. Make it the voyage of a lifetime aboard one of the ultra-luxury vessels available  in North America through Travel in Style, Inc. (www.travelinstyle.com).

The Great Pyramid of Cheops . . . Are You Up to the Adventure?

A journey into the heart of the Great Pyramid is a real-life Indiana Jones adventure. But it can also be a taxing and frightening one.

You'll follow claustrophobic passages cut into the heart of the pyramid, feel the pull of the mass of stone directly above. For better or worse, you have placed yourself in the hands of the engineering expertise of the ancients.

As you continue along the unventilated passages, the oxygen becomes depleted, the air becomes noticeably warmer and more pungent. The ascent of steep stairways consumes more energy than you imagined, and you find yourself short of breath. Lighting is dim, every footstep must be carefully calculated. Low passageways repeatedly oblige you to advance while bent down, and your muscles protest. Where walls disappear into the dark above, you feel wedged into a shaft. Despite warnings, and your own resolve, claustrophobic feelings are hard to suppress.

Finally, you behold the King's Chamber at the heart of the Great Pyramid. The effort to reach it has made the reward more exhilarating than you imagined. If only you can face the return.

Is the King's Chamber for you? If you're not used to bending and regular exercise, you might find the challenge beyond your capabilities. Turning back is more difficult the farther you go, and the experience could leave you aching for days afterwards.

Be realistic about yourself, your abilities, and your disposition. And remember that there are many other rewarding sights and adventures at Giza, without the physical challenge and risks of the King's Chamber.

The decision is up to you
