We also offer additional excursions, which may include: THE OURIKA VALLEY In the morning, we'll head 30 kilometers outside of Marrakech to the lush valley of the Ourika River, which winds down from the peaks of the High Atlas, through clusters of mud-walled houses. Our visit coincides with one of the regular market days. We'll walk among the stands of butchers and vegetable-sellers, merchants of cereals and olive oil, itinerant blacksmiths and sellers of patent medicines and herbal remedies. A barber sets up shop with nothing more than a scissors, hand clipper, and stiff wooden chair, an open-air eatery offers hot food freshly prepared on a brazier. We'll continue to Tafza to see how vases and lamp bases and tables are made in home workshops in both traditional and modern styles, then view and perhaps purchase quartz and amethyst and other minerals of the region. Our lunch stop will be at a country restaurant situated on the valley slopes, offering French and Moroccan specialties, as well as commanding views of the settlements and fields below. This visit operates on Mondays and Fridays, with transportation in an air-conditioned minibus, at a price of $70 per person, including lunch.
ESSAOUIRA AND THE SEASIDE Come down to the sea with us, to experience a different Morocco, steeped in influences from near and far. We'll drive 170 kilometers to Essaouira, with its charming harbor crowded with fishing craft. Essaouira was an imperial outpost in Roman days, when shellfish were harvested to yield a purple dye for togas. In the sixteenth century, it was a Portuguese outpost, and later, a base for corsairs that preyed on coastal shipping. You'll appreciate the sun and breeze of this seaside resort, and its artisans purveying crafts of citrus wood, coffers and tables inlaid with mother of pearl, chess sets, and jewelry wrought of fine silver threads. And of course, you'll lunch on the day's catch in a restaurant facing the harbor. The visit to Essaouira operates most days of the week, with transportation in an air-conditioned minibus, at a price of $70 per person, including lunch. CAMEL RIDING For the romantic and the adventurous, we offer the quintessential Moroccan experience of a sunset camel ride in the vast palm groves around Marrakech. We'll call for you by air-conditioned minibus, and take you out for your rendezvous with your steeds. Before we set off, we'll have some basic instruction. You'll learn how to get up into the saddle, how to sit securely, how to turn, and, most importantly, how to stop! But don't worry. Even if you're not a good student, you'll be accompanied by handlers experienced at keeping these magnificent beasts in line. After the preliminaries, you're off through the palms, to spot the surprisingly rich wildlife in this dry region, and then, as the day ebbs, to proceed at a stately pace under a ceiling of stars in the silent night. Our camel riding adventure is reserved for the physically fit, at a price of $52 per person

FINE DINING IN MARRAKECH We offer our guests incomparable dining, both in the riad, and at select fine establishments in Marrakech. May we suggest the following: DAR MARJANA Just a short walk from Riad Dar Nadir, Dar Marjana offers exquisite Moroccan specialties in the rooms of a fine town home in the medina, the old city of Marrakech. Guests are welcomed by the owner and offered a drink in the patio with its soothing fountain, then escorted to their dining room. Your dinner is served to the accompaniment of lute music, belly dancing, and a duet of traditional Gnaouas performers. Dinner, all drinks, wine and liqueurs are included in the price of $75 per person.
YACUT Music, folklore, tradition, artistry, and fantasy are all on tap from the moment you enter Riad Yacut. A corridor scented with rose and amber and musk leads to a fountain and water garden reflecting flickering flames of lanterns and candles set in sconces. A spiral staircase ascends to a terrace with an incomparable panorama of the entire medina. You'll be looked after by attendants in traditional garb, and entertained by Gnaouas singers and dancers, descendants of slaves brought from Guinea, who play rhythms redolent of the heart of Africa. There will be Arabo-Andalusian airs as well, reflecting Morocco's long association with Spain. We'll escort you to Yacut in an air-conditioned minibus. The price of $90 per person includes dinner, pre-dinner drinks
